Bogotá Metro Line 1, also known as the First Line, reached 83.73% overall completion as of September 30, 2026, according to Empresa Metro de Bogotá, the public company that manages the project. The route runs from Bosa to Calle 72 and Avenida Caracas: 23.9 kilometers and 16 stations.

Three fronts drove the progress: the viaduct, the continuous elevated bridge the trains will run on; the Bosa depot, where trains are stored and maintained; and the stations in the city's southwest. The project now has 737 supports, the bases on which its 874 columns rise.

Trains keep arriving. On October 14, the Mayor's Office confirmed that train number 21 of the 30-train fleet is already in Colombia, on its way to the depot. Commercial operation, meaning service with paying passengers, is still scheduled for March 2028.

What percentage of the Bogotá Metro is complete?

The latest official figure is 83.73%, as of September 30, 2026, according to Empresa Metro de Bogotá's monthly progress report.

The official September report does not break down progress for each of the 16 stations; it does single out the viaduct, the Bosa depot and the southwestern stations as the fronts that drove the month's progress.

How are the Bogotá Metro stations progressing?

The southwestern stations were among the fronts that drove September's progress the most. When he presented the September report, Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán summed it up this way:

“At stations 1, 2 and 3 there is already visible progress on the facades and other finishes.” Carlos Fernando Galán, Mayor of Bogotá, October 7, 2026 (translated from Spanish).

At Station 7, on Avenida Primero de Mayo at Avenida 68, Empresa Metro announced a full closure of the southern road bridge starting the night of October 14. Crews will install the steel structure of the platform and roof and lift the footbridges that will link the entrance buildings to the main hall.

They will also place U-beams and box girders, which are long structural members: some have a U-shaped cross-section and others are hollow and closed, like a box. During the closure, drivers heading east use a contraflow lane set up on the northern bridge.

When will the Bogotá Metro be ready?

The Mayor's Office still lists March 2028 as the start of commercial operation. With an average commercial speed of 42.5 km/h, a trip from Station 1 in Bosa to Calle 72 and Avenida Caracas would take about 27 minutes; today that trip can take up to two hours.

That date has not officially changed. Before opening to the public, the system must go through operational testing. Each train has six cars, carries up to 1,800 passengers, and runs automatically, without a driver.

What does this mean for public works clients?

For a contracting agency, the report shows that in a transit system the viaduct, the stations, the entrances and the surrounding public space are separate fronts that need to move in step. That is why sidewalks, plazas, pedestrian bridges and utility networks should be scheduled at the same pace as the viaduct, not left for the end.

XIE S.A. is carrying out a construction contract to build stations 5, 7 and 8 of Bogotá Metro Line 1 on Avenida Primero de Mayo. The company also built stations, pedestrian bridges, bicycle bridges and public space on the TransMilenio Avenida Américas trunk line.
